Cape Peninsula University Of Technology Interior Design,The practice of interior design relates to architecture on the one hand and to industrial design on the other. The aim of the course is to develop awareness and skills ranging from design in building to furniture design, and could be defined as the creative problem-solving process applied to the practice solution of three-dimensional programs, primarily within the environment of buildings.
Knowledge of the performance of materials and the possibilities they offer in construction is thoroughly researched and understood. Our students are well-versed in the skills required to communicate their design intention and be productively employable on graduation.
The Interior Design program at CPUT is committed to the development of a theoretical basis for the study and practice of design where creativity is linked with and runs parallel to theory. The program’s educational agenda is to challenge the accepted assumptions about Interior Design and test new ideas through design project work.

- To develop a critical awareness and practical application of two- and specifically three-dimensional design principles
- To create awareness of the commercial applications of design
- To encourage understanding of the responsibility of the designer to society and the individual user
- To draw on historical and contemporary studies in order to heighten design awareness
- To provide the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the performance of materials and how they can be applied to construction
- To develop the skills required to communicate the design intention
- Interior design firms offering a professional consultancy service to clients, offer the opportunity to work towards a partnership, or with experience, to establish one’s own practice
- Shop-fitting firms providing a design and supply service for the installation of shop and office interiors
- Retail groups planning their own interiors and employing shop-fitters on a contract basis for installation
- Furniture manufacturers offering a contract or design and supply service
- Interior design shops and suppliers of office furniture offering a design service
- Architectural practices also employ interior specialists in their design teams

These skills, coupled with a deeper understanding of the implications of design thinking, will contribute to the development of the local interior design industry within the global context.

Interior Design is a multi-faceted profession and designers are skilled at assisting clients to realise their goals and create interior environments that are both functional and aesthetically attractive.

Course Information and Fees
Structure and learning approach
The Design Foundation Year is the first year of study in the Extended
Curriculum Programmes in the disciplines of Fashion, Industrial, Jewellery and Surface Design. It has a complex, integrated multidisciplinary course structure. Core academic literacies are embedded in the requirements for projects in both the theory and practical subjects. As such an underpinning and foundational support is provided towards Design knowledge and skills relevant to the various Design disciplines.
Students who take part in the Design Foundation Year are registered in the Extended Curriculum Programme in the Design Discipline of choice. The National Diploma in Design is completed in a minimum of four years.
It is the intention to give students exposure to an integrated approach towards learning and an understanding of the visual language of Design, in order to prepare them for further study in their chosen Design discipline. Conceptual, formal and technical skills are developed incrementally in terms of complexity as the year progresses. The learning process is interactive, with students working individually and in groups.
Target group
All applications received for study towards a National Diploma in a Design discipline are evaluated on merit. All students have to show some potential for study in the filed of design. Students that are educationally underprepared for direct entry into their chosen field of study are referred to the Design Foundation Year for the Extended Curriculum Programme in their Design discipline of choice in which they will be registered.
In order to achieve transformation and cultural diversity in the professional arena, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) provides substantial support to Extended Curriculum Programmes.
Diagnostic Function
The Design Foundation Year also has a diagnostic function, helping students to identify the Design discipline to which they are best suited for further study.
Applicants who are not sure which Design discipline they would like to study and would like to benefit from the diagnostic function and multi-disciplinary approach of the Design Foundation Year may apply for direct admission to the Design Foundation Year. The Foundation Year staff will gladly assist applicants in making the choice towards which discipline to start in. If towards the end of the academic year it has become clear that a student is better suited for further studies in a different Design discipline, a system is in place that can allow progression to the first year of a National Diploma in an alternative design discipline.
Preference is given to applicants from the demographically designated groups. Only applicants with South African Nationality are eligible for Extended Curriculum Programmes.
